How Does Otoplasty (Ear Surgery) Work?

Ears are not someone we usually notice about a person. However, if your ears protrude from your head or are out of proportion, you may feel like no one notices anything else. Young adults with ears that stick out may be subjected to teasing or even bullying. Otoplasty or ear surgery repositions your ears for a flatter, less noticeable appearance.

What is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is a procedure to change the shape, size, or position of the ears. It can correct ears that are too large or small, oddly shaped, or out of proportion to the rest of your features. One of the most common reasons to have otoplasty is to flatten protruding ears, a procedure known as ear pinning. Since the ears are made of cartilage rather than bone, they can be repositioned and reshaped to a more pleasing form.

How Does Otoplasty (Ear Surgery) Work?

During ear surgery, an incision is made behind or inside your ear. Dr. Sozer uses this incision to remove or reshape the cartilage that forms your ear. He can manipulate this cartilage in many ways to create a pleasing shape, more proportionate size, and less visibility. Scars are usually unnoticeable once healed, and your cartilage will hold its new position, making otoplasty long-lasting and effective.

What are the Benefits of Ear Surgery?

The biggest benefit of ear surgery is increased confidence. When you have large or protruding ears, you may feel reluctant to draw attention to yourself. Your newly positioned ears will let you feel confident that people are noticing you, not your ears. As an added benefit, you will no longer have to choose your hairstyle or accessory choices based on concerns about your ears.

Individuals as young as 15 years old (with an accompanying guardian) can have otoplasty, improving confidence at this vitally important time in social development. Ear surgery can allow your teen to embark on their new adventures without worrying about their ears.

What is Recovery Like After Ear Surgery?

You may experience some bruising and swelling around the ears that fade within a week or two. You will have bandages over your ears for a few days, followed by a sports-style headband to wear at night. Full healing can take several months. During this time, any remaining swelling will resolve, letting you appreciate your final results. Once established, you can expect your ears’ new position to last a lifetime.

Am I a Good Candidate for Otoplasty?

Candidates for otoplasty are 15 or older (minors must have a guardian present) and in good health. Candidates should understand the risks and benefits of the procedure and be able to schedule appropriate recovery time. You may not be a good candidate if you have certain medical conditions.
