Hair transplantation is one of the cosmetic procedures that has seen a large increase over the last few years. Hair loss is always a difficult issue to deal with, specially in young men and women. The technology available today allows the results of hair replacement to be virtually undetectable. Hair is taken from the back of the scalp and placed one follicle at a time in the frontal area.

We are able to graft between 1,000 and 2,000 hair follicles at a time, resulting in very dramatic results. Sometimes a second or even third procedure are necessary to create more density. After transplantation, the hair continues to grow in normal fashion. The transplanted hairs do not fall, since they are not programmed to be genetically susceptible.

Although the procedure is more common among men, women can also benefit from the procedure. Careful examination in women is necessary to discard any metabolic problem, since hair loss from nutritional deficiencies, hormonal changes, or stress are not amenable to hair transplantation. Most women are candidates when female hair loss is prevalent in their families. Typically the genetic hair loss in women is confined to the coronal and posterior frontal area.

Hair transplantation is also very effective in camouflaging previous scars in the scalp, loss of sideburns, and even loss of eyebrows.

Good communication and a thorough examination is essential before undergoing hair transplantation.
