Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is an option available for women who have had to undergo a breast removal procedure. Breast reconstruction procedures can restore the breast to a natural-looking size and shape after a mastectomy or lumpectomy. El Paso Cosmetic Surgery proudly offers breast reconstruction procedures to women who wish to improve the aesthetic appearance, symmetry, and/or size of their breasts after a breast removal procedure.

What is a Breast Reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction procedures involve re-building the shape of the breasts, either with the use of implants or the patient’s own tissue. There are multiple different techniques that can be used during breast reconstruction surgery, and your surgeon will recommend the type of technique that is most appropriate for you and your unique situation.

What is a Breast Reconstruction Procedure Like?

The type of breast reconstruction procedure you have will be determined by multiple factors, including your health, the type of mastectomy or lumpectomy you had, your surgical history, and your goals for the reconstruction procedure.

Most breast reconstruction procedures involve the use of tissue expanders and breast implants. Expanders are silicone balloons inserted under the skin and gradually filled with a saline solution over the course of a few weeks. Expanders are especially useful for reconstruction patients whose skin has already healed after a breast removal procedure. With such patients, expanders are used to stretch the skin in order to accommodate the implant. When the skin has expanded sufficiently, the expander is replaced with a breast implant, and the nipple and areola are surgically reconstructed.

Breast reconstruction procedures can also be performed using the patient’s own tissue to rebuild the breast, rather than a breast implant. These types of breast constructions are also called flap reconstructions.

What is Recovery Like After a Breast Reconstruction?

Recovery periods vary depending on the type and extent of breast reconstruction surgery performed. Tiredness and soreness are common for one or two weeks after surgery. Doctors typically prescribe medication to help ease patients’ pain and discomfort. Most patients will be able to go home after a few days, although one or more fluid draining tubes may be left in place.

Doctors may also recommend the use of special support garments in order to assist in healing and prevent injury. In most cases, relief will be felt in a few weeks, with a return to your normal activity being possible after a couple of months.

Am I a Good Breast Reconstruction Candidate?

Women who need to undergo a breast removal procedure may be candidates for breast reconstruction to restore the size and shape of the breasts. Breast reconstruction may be performed immediately after breast removal or after the patient has had time to recover. A proper evaluation is needed to determine whether you are a candidate for a breast reconstruction procedure.
