Arm Lift

With aging or weight fluctuations, skin can stretch and lose its natural elasticity, leading to skin that sags or droops off the arms. Many people find their sagging skin aesthetically undesirable, and it can also be uncomfortable and cause clothing not to fit properly.

What is an Arm Lift?

An arm lift, or brachioplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes or reduces excess sagging skin from the arms to create a firmer, more toned appearance. There are several approaches to arm lift surgery, and at El Paso Cosmetic Surgery, we will tailor your procedure to your individual needs.

What is an Arm Lift Procedure Like?

For patients with mild excess skin, we can typically perform the arm lift through an incision hidden in the armpit. For patients with extensive excess upper arm skin, which is common for those who have lost a lot of weight, the incision will run from the elbow, up the back of the arm, through the armpit, and onto the side of the chest. After removing excess skin from the arms, the incisions are expertly closed with sutures.

Scarring will be less noticeable as the incisions are made on the undersides of the arms. Depending on the extent of the excess skin and the type of arm lift performed, the scar length can vary. We do recommend medical grade scar products to our arm lift patients, and we also offer laser treatments that can help minimize the appearance of the scars.

There are three main types of arm lifts performed at El Paso Cosmetic Surgery. These are:

Short Scar Brachioplasty

In a short scar Brachioplasty, the incision is significantly shorter than a standard brachioplasty and is well concealed in the armpit without extension down the length of the arm.

Standard Brachioplasty

In a standard Brachioplasty, an incision is made from the elbow, up the back of the arm, to the armpit.

Extended Brachioplasty

In an extended Brachioplasty, the standard incision is made from the elbow to the armpit, and it is extended through the armpit and down the lateral chest wall.

What is Recovery Like After an Arm Lift?

Arm lift recovery can range depending on the procedure performed and the individual patient. Most patients can expect an estimated recovery time of about two to three weeks, but your surgeon will give you a more personalized estimation.

Most patients, depending on their employment, may return to work within 10 days, with some limitations. After an arm lift, you will have restrictions on your range of motion for the first two or three weeks, as movements that stress the incisions can risk the opening of the suture line. Dr. Sozer do not recommend the use of a compression garment after an arm lift.

Full results should be seen within three to six months after surgery, as swelling gradually decreases. The scars will continue to fade over time. Although the results from a Brachioplasty are generally permanent, any significant weight gain or loss, as well as the normal influences of aging, can cause changes in your appearance. It’s important to know that your arms, skin elasticity, and surgical results will change with age.
