Post-Bariatric Surgery

Congratulations on your weight loss! For people who have lost an excessive amount of weight, post-bariatric surgery can be the end of a long and exciting journey. Post-bariatric reconstruction procedures are customizable, and vary greatly from patient to patient, depending on where excess skin is concentrated, the patient’s goals for the procedure, and our determination of how best to meet those goals.

What is Post-Bariatric Surgery?

Designed specifically for each patient, post-bariatric reconstruction surgery removes excess skin that is common after weight loss. During post-bariatric surgery, we can combine many procedures into one operation. At El Paso Cosmetic Surgery, we specialize in body contouring procedures to help patients look and feel their best after weight loss.

What is a Post-Bariatric Procedure Like?

The post-bariatric reconstruction procedures vary greatly from patient to patient and you only need to undergo the procedures that you feel will help you achieve your desired results.

Procedures may include:

Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, removes excess skin and fat that accumulates around the abdominal area. Tummy tucks also tighten and firm the abdominal muscles, creating an overall flatter appearance to the area, which can be resistant to diet and exercise.

An abdominoplasty is ideal for patients with a midsection that protrudes or is out of proportion with the rest of their body. After extreme weight loss, it is incredibly common to experience excess skin concentrated around the abdominal area, as well as some remaining extra fatty tissue. If you have sagging or excess abdominal skin, a tummy tuck may be a beneficial procedure for you.

After an initial evaluation, Dr. Sozer will recommend which tummy tuck procedure is best suited for you. The types of tummy tucks that are performed at El Paso Cosmetic Surgery include the:

  • Mini tummy tuck
  • Standard tummy tuck
  • Extended tummy tuck
  • Circumferential lift

Arm Lift

As people undergo dramatic changes in weight, the skin on the upper arms can sag, creating an aesthetically unpleasant effect. An arm lift, or brachioplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes or reduces excess sagging or drooping skin from your arms, giving a firmer, more toned appearance.

Men and women who have undergone bariatric surgery and are now of normal weight with more excess skin than fat are typically excellent candidates for brachioplasty. It is ideal for people who have lost large amounts of weight, but whose skin has not conformed to their new body shape.

After evaluation, Dr. Sozer will recommend which arm lift procedure is best for you. The types of arm lifts performed at El Paso Cosmetic Surgery are:

  • Short scar brachioplasty
  • Standard brachioplasty
  • Extended brachioplasty

Thigh Lift

Excess skin between the thighs can be both a cosmetic and comfort concern. A thigh lift removes this excess skin on the thighs, making movement more comfortable and creating more aesthetically contoured legs. The ideal candidate for a thigh lift procedure will have more excess skin than fat around the upper thigh, though some fat may be removed during the procedure as well.

After evaluation, Dr. Sozer will recommend which thigh lift procedure is best for you. The types of thigh lifts performed at El Paso Cosmetic Surgery are:

  • Spiral lift
  • Medial thigh lift
  • Extended medial thigh lift

Breast Procedures

After losing a significant amount of weight, the breasts can become deflated and start to sag. Breast procedures can remove excess skin, tighten and lift the breasts, improve breast shape, and/or add fullness.

There are several types of breast procedures and we will tailor your procedure to your individual needs. Based on your physician’s evaluation and how your body has responded to weight loss, you may benefit from one or more of the following procedures:

  • Breast augmentation
  • Breast lift
  • Breast reduction
  • Gynecomastia surgery (for men)

Liposuction

Liposuction is a procedure that removes unwanted deposits of fat from the stomach, hips, thighs, arms, neck, and many other areas of the body with the goal of producing a more proportionate body contour.

Weight is not always lost evenly throughout the body, and after extreme weight loss, patients may feel that they still have bulges of unwanted fat in certain areas. Liposuction can be combined with other post-bariatric surgery procedures to improve the overall contour and shape of the body.

El Paso Cosmetic Surgery has several types of liposuction technology and based on your needs, Dr. Sozer may recommend one or a combination of types of liposuction.

Tumescent liposuction
Standard liposuction
Vaser liposuction
Smartlipo Triplex

Face and Neck Lift

Loss of tissue elasticity can occur with rapid weight loss and expansion and stretching of the skin. Sagging skin commonly develops around the face and neck after bariatric surgery.

A combination facelift and neck lift raises the cheek pads, corrects the jowls, and removes the loose and sagging skin from the neck and face.

Facelifts are customizable procedures, and during the initial consultation at our practice, Dr. Sozer will examine your face and neck, pointing out multiple techniques that can be used during the facelift.

What is Recovery Like After Post-Bariatric Surgery?

Recovery time following a post-bariatric surgery varies greatly among individuals. Depending on your general physical condition and the extent of your surgery, you may be able to return to non-strenuous activities two to four weeks after surgery. More extensive surgeries may require longer recovery times. It is normal to experience mild, periodic discomfort and swelling during recovery. Full results should be seen within three to six months post-surgery.

Am I a Good Post-Bariatric Surgery Candidate?

Typically, candidates for this surgery suffer from loose, inelastic skin on multiple areas of the body due to weight loss from lifestyle changes or bariatric surgery.

You may be a good candidate for post-bariatric surgery if you:

  • Are 18 months post-bariatric surgery and have plateaued with their weight for at least 6 months.
  • Have sagging skin around the face and neck, upper arms, breast, abdomen, buttocks, and/or thighs
  • Are a non-smoker
  • Have a positive outlook and realistic goals for what surgery can accomplish
