Can I Get Different Implant Sizes to Fix Uneven Breasts?

Breast asymmetry is far more common than most people realize. Studies suggest the majority of women have some degree of difference between their breasts, whether in size, shape, nipple position, or all three. For many women, the variation stays subtle enough that it goes largely unnoticed.

For others, the difference feels significant enough to affect how clothing fits, how they feel in a swimsuit, and how they see themselves overall. The good news is that breast augmentation can address asymmetry directly, and yes, using different implant sizes represents one of the most effective tools for doing so.

Why Breasts Develop Unevenly

Asymmetry develops for several reasons. Natural developmental variation during puberty accounts for most cases, with one side simply growing more than the other for reasons that have nothing to do with health.

Hormonal fluctuations, pregnancy, and breastfeeding can exaggerate existing differences or create new ones. Prior surgery or injury can also alter the shape or volume of one breast relative to the other.

Understanding the source of the asymmetry matters because size difference alone does not always tell the full story. Two breasts can measure differently in volume but also vary in shape, skin laxity, nipple height, or chest wall anatomy. A thorough evaluation identifies all of the contributing factors, not just the most obvious one.

How Different Implant Sizes Address the Difference

Placing implants of different sizes in each breast allows Dr. Ozan Sozer to compensate for the volume difference and bring both sides into closer alignment. The smaller breast typically receives a larger implant, the larger breast a smaller one, with the goal of achieving a balanced, proportional result across both sides.

This sounds straightforward in principle, but the execution requires careful planning. Factors Dr. Sozer evaluates before selecting implant sizes include:

  • The volume difference between the two breasts as measured precisely during consultation
  • The base width of each breast, since implants should match the natural footprint of each side
  • Skin stretch and tissue coverage on each breast, which affects how each implant will sit and settle
  • The patient’s overall size goals, since the correction needs to account for the final desired outcome, not just the existing difference

When Size Alone Does Not Solve the Problem

Volume difference responds well to different implant sizes, but asymmetry sometimes involves more than volume. If one breast sits higher on the chest wall, if nipple positions differ significantly, or if one breast has substantially more skin laxity than the other, implants alone may not fully correct the imbalance.

In those cases, Dr. Sozer may recommend combining augmentation with a breast lift on one or both sides. A lift on the more ptotic breast can raise the nipple and tighten the skin envelope so that both breasts sit at a similar height after augmentation. Addressing shape and position alongside volume produces a more complete correction than size selection alone can achieve.

Setting Realistic Expectations

Perfect symmetry does not exist in nature, and it does not exist as a surgical outcome either. The goal of treating breast asymmetry is meaningful improvement, bringing both sides close enough that the difference no longer affects how clothing fits or how a patient feels about her appearance.

Most patients find the improvement significant and the results well worth pursuing. Dr. Sozer discusses realistic outcomes during consultation so patients understand what augmentation can and cannot accomplish for their specific anatomy before making any decisions.

Used to switch between here and Southwest Plastic Surgery to try other places as well. Whenever I called SW they’ve placed me on hold for 10+ minutes, THREE times. I hung up every time. Got 2 procedures done at the Medspa, I was not pleased I asked to speak to my nurse multiple times and I never got a call back. Decided to stay at EP cosmetic surgery for all my Medspa and surgical procedures. Years ago I got a rhinoplasty and was not fully content with my results. Dr. Sozer gave me an outstanding discount for an alternative until I was able to get surgery again and not only did he adjust pricing to fix the results I was previously not happy with, but I am SO happy with the results of my rhinoplasty this time around. Got 3 other procedures done which I am so in love with my results. And coming from myself and a ton of my friends, he is THE best in the El Paso and Las Cruces area for Breast Augmentation. At least 7 of my friends have gotten breast aug with him and they all love their results and look amazing. I can not stress enough what an amazing transformation he has done on my body. The MedSpa- not once have I been put on hold over the phone for over one minute. They pick up the phone immediately and answer all of my questions with such good and friendly attitude. No matter how booked appointments may be they always try to book me something closest to my preference. Staff is always professional and friendly. They never take too long to call me in and all of the nurses work with me and do such a beautiful job. I always get a call back in the same day if I have any questions or concerns. And after surgical procedures they always call to check up on me. No to mention the best prices and deals I’ve seen. Overall so pleased with my experience here at El Paso cosmetic surgery for the past few years. I NEVER give reviews but they absolutely deserve it and they will have a client and recommendations out of me for a long time. Thank you.
