Can You Breastfeed After Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation can help women gain confidence back in their appearance. But many women wonder if having a breast augmentation can affect breastfeeding.

What is a Breast Augmentation?

Dr. Ozan Sozer are experienced, Board-certified plastic surgeons that perform several breast augmentations each year. Breast augmentation is when breast implants are placed either under the chest muscles of the breasts or breast tissue. This surgery enhances the shape and appearance of the breasts, making them more proportional to the body.

<em>individual results may vary<em>

We offer several types of implants at El Paso Cosmetic Surgery, including saline implants, silicone implants, Gummy Bear implants, and SoftTouch Cohesive implants. All of these implants have been approved by the FDA.

Many women also choose to have a breast lift with breast augmentation because breast augmentation addresses size while a breast lift addresses sagginess.

Can You Breastfeed After Breast Augmentation?

While the nerves can be affected with breast augmentation like with any surgery, women who have implants under the muscle are less likely to have problems with producing breast milk.

One of the options for incision placement that Dr. Sozer offer is around the areola. An incision around the areola does not necessarily mean complete detachment, so it can still be attached to the breast milk ducts. Regardless, there is no guarantee of full production of breast milk. Dr. Sozer will go over your personalized surgical plan to see which placement is most suitable for you if you want to have children in the future.

Is Breast Milk Affected By Breast Implants?

There is insufficient evidence that breast milk is affected by breast implants. While mainly silicone implants have been studied, there have been no clinical reports about babies being affected by the breast milk of mothers who have breast implants.

Candidates for Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation may be right for you if you have breasts that you feel self-conscious about being too small. Breast augmentation can also fill out breasts for those who have experienced volume loss or sagginess due to pregnancy.
