Facial Hair Transplant

For various reasons ranging from trauma to genetics, some patients have scant facial hair on their beards, mustaches, or sideburns. Some have small deficiencies in these areas, while others have a complete lack of hair density. Patients who desire fuller facial hair can benefit from facial hair transplantation, as well as patients who have scars on an area of their face that would typically grow hair.

What is a Facial Hair Transplant?

Follicular unit hair transplantation is an excellent technique to restore facial hair. Hair from the scalp is taken through the follicular unit extraction technique (FUE) using the NeoGraft® hair restoration system. The hair is then transplanted to the face, one by one, to restore the sideburns, beard, or mustache. Because donor hair is healthy, the dominant hair follicles keep on growing hair in their new location.

Scars in the scalp, brows, beard, mustache, or sideburns can also be covered with hair transplantation. These scars often result from previous surgeries or trauma and result in bald spots surrounded by normal hair. One of the most common facial hair transplant procedures is coverage of facelift scars in the temples and hairline areas.

What is a Facial Hair Transplant Procedure Like?

Facial hair restoration and transplantation surgery is a fairly simple, outpatient procedure. During the treatment, our hair transplant technicians, place real hair into the bald area(s). This hair continues to grow naturally after the procedure. At our West Texas office, we perform this minimally invasive procedure under local anesthesia.

The transplantation process requires the placement of many micro-grafts, each containing between one and three hairs. These micro-grafts are taken from a donor site on the side or back of the head and are randomly implanted in the area of hair loss so that they will grow in a natural pattern.

Depending on the area to be filled, anywhere from a few hairs to thousands can be transplanted resulting in great natural-appearing results with good densities. The average number of hair follicles needed for facial hair starts at around 500 and up.

What is Recovery Like After a Facial Hair Transplant?

After a facial hair transplantation procedure, patients may experience some minor bruising, redness, and swelling in the treatment area. Some patients may also experience scabbing. After a facial hair transplant, the hair will remain in place for approximately two to three weeks. The hair will then shed as part of its natural process. New hair growth typically begins within three to four months of treatment. Some patients may require multiple procedures to achieve their desired facial hair fullness.

Am I a Good Facial Hair Transplant Candidate?

To be a candidate for hair transplantation, each individual must have an ample amount of donor hair. Donor hair is typically taken from the back or sides of the scalp. Patients should also be in good general health and have realistic expectations about what hair transplantation can achieve. The texture, coarseness, and curl of the individual’s hair can also influence the results of facial hair transplantation.
