PRP for Hair Loss

Hair loss and thinning hair are common concerns that can be emotionally devastating for both men and women. At our SkinCeuticals Advanced Clinical Spa by El Paso Cosmetic Surgery, we have several surgical and nonsurgical solutions for hair restoration. An effective option for treating hair loss that can be used alone or in combination with other treatments is PRP.

What is PRP for Hair Loss?

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy for hair loss is a treatment that has become one of the newest sensations in non-surgical hair restoration. PRP is a high concentration of platelets, stem cells, and growth factors in a small volume of plasma. The PRP is extracted by drawing a small amount of blood from the patient.

Then, the blood sample is placed in a centrifuge that spins at a very high speed, causing the platelets to separate from the other components of the blood. Once the platelets are concentrated in the plasma, they can be re-injected to the patient’s thinning areas. The healing benefits of PRP stimulate hair growth and cause hair to thicken.

PRP is said to be most beneficial for those who are experiencing the early stages of thinning. The treatment is also extremely beneficial as a preventative treatment for those whose hair loss is inherited.

What is a PRP Hair Rejuvenation Treatment Like?

When you receive PRP injections at the El Paso Cosmetic Surgery Advanced Clinical MedSpa, the first step of your treatment will be a blood draw done by our Registered Nurse or Medical Assistant. The sample will then be placed in the centrifuge, and you will have some time to sit back and relax. When the PRP is ready, a thin syringe will be used to inject small amounts of the PRP under the skin over the entire treatment area.

Recovery and Results After a PRP for Hair Loss Treatment?

Most patients who undergo this hair loss treatment experience no downtime and are able to return to normal activities within 24 hours. Patients may experience slight tenderness and/or bruising, which will usually subside over the next three to five days.

The number of treatments varies for each person and is customizable. We recommend a minimum of four PRP treatments along with pre-and post-restoration products to get the best results. Platelet-rich plasma can be combined with Neograft® Light Treatment and/or Neograft® Hair Transplants.

Patients can see results within four to six weeks. However, the best results can take up to eight months after treatment to become visible. Hair follicles see about a 60% increase in thickness. Most patients will need to repeat a PRP treatment after one year to maintain the hair growth effects.

Am I a Good PRP Hair Rejuvenation Candidate?

PRP for hair loss is best for patients who require stimulation of inactive or newly implanted hair follicles into an active phase. You may be a great candidate for this procedure if you:

  • Are in the early stages of thinning hair or hair loss
  • Have experienced natural hair thinning or hair loss
  • Would like to prevent genetic hair loss
  • Are in good overall health
  • Have realistic expectations of what this treatment can achieve
