Lip Augmentation

Lip augmentation surgery is a feasible option for those who wish to have fuller and firmer lips. The natural aging process results in significant changes in appearance, and the lips can be especially affected. As people get older, collagen production slows down dramatically, causing the lips to take on a deflated and saggy look. Lines will also begin to form around the mouth, with their appearance deepening and becoming more noticeable over time.

The Lip Enhancement Process

Lip cosmetic surgery is aimed at enhancing the lips in order to bring about a younger looking appearance. During the procedure, either collagen or dermatologic filler is placed into the lips of the patient. The results of a dermal filler injection are temporary, and most patients will require another injection 6 to 12 months after the first procedure.

With most patients, the results of lip enhancement surgery will be apparent almost immediately. Swelling is a common occurrence after surgery, but this will recede and disappear over the next 24 hours. After this time, the lips will take on the appearance that they will retain for the next few months, and they will look and feel normal as well.

The procedure itself involves only a slight pinching or stinging sensation while the filler is injected into the lips. The doctor may massage the lips after the procedure and apply ice for a few minutes. Patients may request to have their lips numbed before the procedure with an injectable dental nerve block or a local anesthetic.

After Surgery

Most lip augmentation surgeries will take from 15 to 20 minutes at the most, with the numbness disappearing completely after 15 minutes. Although most patients will be able to go back to their normal routines immediately afterward, it is advisable to refrain from strenuous physical activity or travel for three days after the procedure.

Not every patient requires full lip cosmetic surgery. In most cases, spot treatment of only certain areas of the lips may be sufficient to bring about a significant improvement in appearance. Patients may opt to have only the bottom lip or the middle of the top lip treated, for example, although treating both lips is an option as well.

Most patients will experience bruising and bleeding at the injection site, although this is totally normal. Much of the bruising should disappear within five to seven days. If blood clots form in or around the treatment area, the doctor may opt to remedy them with laser treatment.

Getting the most out of lip augmentation surgery

As with any type of surgical procedure, it is advisable to err on the side of caution and to manage expectations prior to undergoing surgery. Patients that have naturally thin lips for example, would benefit more from gradual treatment that improves the appearance of the lips slowly over time. Going for full lips with a single procedure is not advisable from a medical standpoint, and may result in an unnatural appearance. It would be helpful to bring pictures of people with lips that you wish to emulate, but don’t ignore the doctor’s recommendations as to the type and extent of the procedure to be performed as well.
