What is Juvederm® XC?
Juvederm® XC Ultra and Ultra Plus are hyaluronic acid dermal fillers that were approved by the FDA in 2006. The hyaluronic acid gel is used to treat facial wrinkles, as well as lines and folds on the lower face, such as the nasolabial folds and marionettes. Juvederm® XC Ultra and Ultra Plus can also be used to add volume and definition to the lips.
Juvederm® Ultra Plus has a consistency that is thicker than Juvederm® Ultra. Juvederm® Ultra Plus is used more often to correct more severe wrinkles, nasolabial folds, and marionette lines. A proper evaluation is recommended to determine which filler is best for you.
The hyaluronic acid fillers hydrate the skin by holding onto water and act as a “cushioning agent,” providing volume to the injected area. In 2010, the FDA approved a Juvederm® XC formulation with the local anesthetic lidocaine to provide patients with a more comfortable injection experience. Juvederm® XC Ultra and Ultra Plus are still available without Lidocaine for those with a sensitivity to the medication.
What is a Juvederm® XC Treatment Like?
At El Paso Cosmetic Surgery’s Advanced Clinical MedSpa, Juvederm® XC Ultra and Ultra Plus treatments are performed by highly trained Nurse Injectors. During the treatment, a small amount of dermal filler will be injected under the skin using a thin syringe. The area may then be massaged to disperse the filler. The injections typically only last 2-3 minutes. The number of syringes needed by each patient depends on the amount of volume loss and the patient’s aesthetic goals.
Recovery and Results After a Juvederm® XC Treatment?
There is no downtime after treatment with Juvederm® XC Ultra or Ultra Plus. Side effects tend to be minor and are typical for any kind of injectable filler. These include swelling of the skin around the injection site, redness, bruising, bumps, and skin irritation. If these side effects do occur, they should pass within one week. We also recommend sleeping on your back for the first three nights after treatment so there is no shifting pressure on the filler.
You will be able to see the effects of the treatment immediately. The full results will be apparent after two weeks, as bruising and swelling subside. Studies conducted by the manufacturer, Allergen, report that Juvederm® Ultra Plus XC results last for 9 to 12 months. However, each patient is different and results can vary on a case-to-case basis. It is recommended to be treated regularly to retain the best results.
