Our skin is an extremely important, powerful organ that acts as a barrier to protect us from the environment. Unfortunately, in this process, it can become damaged. UV radiation can lead to pigmentation concerns and sun damage, while aging can lead to fine lines and wrinkles. More severe skin traumas like surgery and acne can cause scarring. Fraxel® is a revolutionary way to address the most severe signs of skin damage.

What is Fraxel®?

Fraxel® is a high-intensity skin resurfacing laser that can be used to treat a variety of skin concerns, including hyperpigmentation, acne scars, and wrinkles. The Fraxel® Dual laser utilizes two types of laser technologies to create dramatic skin improvements.

The first is a non-ablative laser that heats the deeper layers of the skin. This laser sends thin columns of light energy into the dermis, triggering the body’s natural healing response. This leads to an increase in the production of collagen and the stimulation of new skin cells. The second laser is an ablative CO2 laser, which precisely vaporizes the topmost layers of skin. This removes the most damaged, surface skin cells to reveal smooth, fresh skin underneath.

These two layers can be used in a customizable treatment protocol to resurface the skin and address unique skin concerns. The intensity of the treatment can also be customized depending on the severity of each individual’s concerns and aesthetic goals. It’s a simple, effective treatment that reverses signs of aging and improves the texture and tone of the skin.

Fraxel® skin resurfacing can be used to treat the following:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Surface scarring
  • Pigmentation
  • Melasma
  • Sun damage
  • Actinic Keratosis (AK)

What is a Fraxel® Treatment Like?

Prior to your Fraxel® laser treatment, a local anesthetic will be applied to numb the treatment area. During the procedure, most patients can feel the warmth from the laser, as well as a tingling or prickling sensation. While this may be mildly uncomfortable, the anesthetic ensures that the treatment is not painful. Once the Fraxel® laser procedure has started, it typically takes between 20 and 40 minutes to complete, depending on the size of the treatment area.

Recovery and Results After a Fraxel® Treatment?

Immediately after Fraxel® laser treatment, your skin will look and feel as though you have a sunburn. Over the following days, as your skin begins to heal, you will experience mild to moderate discoloration and peeling. Most patients can expect a downtime of approximately three to five days. The amount of recovery time you need will depend on your unique treatment protocol and healing experience.

Patients will notice an improvement in the appearance of their skin as soon as the peeling phase has completed, but the benefits will continue to improve as collagen increases over the next three months. When treating skin conditions, patients may be recommended a series of three to five sessions to achieve the best results. After the Fraxel® laser treatment, the skin is visibly smoother and more youthful, with improved texture and tone.

Am I a Good Fraxel® Candidate?

The Fraxel® laser treatment can be customized to suit a wide variety of skin concerns and severities. You may be a candidate for Fraxel® laser if you:

  • Have fine lines, wrinkles, and signs of aging skin
  • Have textured skin or acne scars
  • Have uneven skin tone or hyperpigmentation
  • Are in generally good health
  • Have a positive outlook and realistic treatment expectations

However, Fraxel® laser is not for everyone, including people with certain skin conditions. People with active acne may also not be candidates for Fraxel®. To find out if Fraxel® skin resurfacing is right for you, schedule a consultation with one of our clinicians.
