The mommy makeover, also known as post-pregnancy surgery, is a combination of cosmetic procedures that restore your body to its pre-pregnancy appearance. If you find yourself missing how you used to look before the baby, you’re not alone. The mommy makeover procedure has helped many women experience the joys of pregnancy and motherhood without sacrificing their body confidence.
What is a Mommy Makeover?
The mommy makeover addresses aesthetic issues caused by hormone and weight fluctuations during pregnancy. Additionally, the mommy makeover helps correct lost breast volume and shape caused by pregnancy and breastfeeding. A mommy makeover includes a combination of procedures to address each woman’s specific needs.
What is a Mommy Makeover Procedure Like?
Mommy makeovers will be customized based on your specific concerns, which means you only need to undergo the procedures that will help achieve your desired results. Each procedure is designed to help address the cosmetic issues that commonly arise during pregnancy, resulting in youthful-looking breasts and a slimmer, more contoured stomach.
Procedures may include:
Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
After pregnancy, many women feel dissatisfaction with their abdominal area due to stretch marks, laxity of the abdominal wall, and/or loosening of the skin. A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) removes the excess loose skin and stubborn fat that tends to accumulate around the abdomen. A tummy tuck can also tighten and repair the abdominal muscles, correcting the muscle separation that often happens during pregnancy.
Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
Gravity, loss of skin elasticity from weight gain and loss, pregnancy, and breastfeeding can all negatively affect breast shape and firmness. The breast lift procedure, also known as a mastopexy, lifts and tightens sagging or deflated breasts. Your surgeon might also recommend adding breast implants (breast augmentation) when a lift will not provide sufficient volume.
During pregnancy, breasts often swell to a fuller size and shape. For some women, their breasts remain larger after delivery and postpartum. It is common for women to feel that their breasts are too large for the rest of their body, and the additional fullness can be heavy, even causing back pain. A breast reduction procedure removes excess breast fat, tissue, and skin to achieve a breast size proportional to your body.
While some women’s breasts retain their fullness after delivery, other women’s breasts may return to their pre-pregnancy size. In these cases, the breasts can become loose and lack the fullness many women desire. If your breasts do not sag but lack shape and fullness, your surgeon may recommend a breast augmentation. A breast augmentation will modify your breast size and shape using implants (saline implants, silicone gel implants, or cohesive gel implants).
It is also common for women to experience new bulges of fat after pregnancy. These fat deposits can be stubborn and not respond to diet and exercise. Liposuction is a procedure that removes unwanted fat deposits and can help improve the contour of the stomach, hips, thighs, arms, and many other areas of the body. Liposuction can also create a more hourglass and proportional figure.
What is Recovery Like After a Mommy Makeover?
Recovery time following a mommy makeover varies greatly among individuals. Depending on your general physical condition and the extent of your surgery, you may be able to return to non-strenuous activities within one to three weeks after surgery. Many patients can resume their normal activities, including mild exercise, within a few weeks. It is normal to experience mild, periodic discomfort and swelling during recovery. Full results should be seen within three to six months post-surgery.
Am I a Good Mommy Makeover Candidate?
You may be a good candidate for a mommy makeover if:
- You have sagging breasts, uneven breasts, decreased breast volume, drooping nipples, and/or stretched areolas as a result of pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Your breasts are too large for your body and/or cause back pain
- Your tummy has loose skin and stretch marks, and your waistline has become thick and undefined
- You had a C-section and now have areas of fat hanging over your surgical scar
- You suffer from pockets of fat that don’t respond to a healthy diet and exercise
- You are a non-smoker
- You have a positive outlook and realistic goals for what surgery can accomplish
- You are committed to leading a healthy lifestyle, including proper nutrition and fitness
Patients continuously gaining and losing weight are not good candidates for liposuction. If lifestyle changes to stabilize weight are not effectively implemented, the results from liposuction will degrade with time. Patients who have loose or sagging skin or poor skin elasticity may not be a candidate for liposuction.
