Breast Reduction

Women with excessively large breasts that feel that their breasts are too large in proportion to their body frame can greatly benefit from a breast reduction. Large breasts can not only cause women to feel uncomfortable about their appearance, but can also lead to physical symptoms such as neck and back pain, bra indentations on the shoulders, and recurrent skin rashes under the breasts. Breast reduction surgery can help resolve these problems and improve the appearance of the breasts.

What is a Breast Reduction?

A breast reduction is a procedure that removes excess fat, tissue, and skin from the breasts. This procedure can reduce the size of the breasts to one that is more proportional and ideal for the patient. Breast reductions can also alleviate the physical pain and discomfort associated with overly large breasts.

What is a Breast Reduction Procedure Like?

Various breast reduction techniques can be utilized depending on each patient’s breast size and shape. During your initial consultation, Dr. Sozer will examine your breasts, thoroughly discuss all of your questions and concerns, and select the technique most appropriate for you.

During the procedure, an incision is made around the areola. Depending on the size of the breasts and the severity with which they sag, the incision may be extended down the center of the breast, known as a lollipop incision. For severe cases, an anchor incision is used, which extends under the crease of the breast.

Dr. Sozer will then remove the excess breast tissue, fat, and skin, and reposition the breasts. They will ensure that your breasts are symmetrical and well-shaped, and the areolas will be placed centrally on the breasts in a natural-looking, lifted position. You may also choose to have the size of your areolas reduced.

What is Recovery Like After a Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction patients can return home the day of their surgery. Patients will typically need assistance at home for the first to two days and will be ready to perform moderate activities within a week to ten days. Vigorous activities should be avoided for four to six weeks, including sports or tasks that require excessive lifting or arm movement. Patients may return to all their normal activities in about three months.

Am I a Good Breast Reduction Candidate?

Patients who feel bothered by the large size of their breasts make excellent candidates for breast reduction surgery. Women of a wide variety of ages can benefit from a breast reduction, including younger women whose breasts grew quickly, and older women whose breasts are beginning to sag more severely.

You may be a good candidate for a breast reduction if you:

  • Have breasts that limit your physical activity
  • Experience back, neck, and shoulder pain caused by the weight of your breasts
  • Have shoulder indentations from bra straps
  • Have skin irritation beneath the breast crease
  • Are healthy and do not have any medical conditions that may impair healing
  • Have a positive outlook and realistic expectations
  • Are a non-smoker

Frequently Asked Questions

The cost of a breast reduction can range depending on each individual’s needs. The starting price for a breast reduction procedure is $7,000.  Depending on the complexity of the procedure and other factors such as surgical center and anesthesia fees, costs can increase.

For most patients, the results of breast reduction will last for a long time. However, significant weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and breastfeeding may affect the shape and size of the breasts over time. In these cases, the patient may choose to undergo a breast lift operation to raise the position of the breasts and restore their shape.

The size and visibility of the scars from a breast reduction procedure usually depend on the shape of the breasts and the amount of excess tissue, but all breast reductions will result in some scarring. Within time, most scars will fade. However, scar visibility can vary. We recommend medical-grade scar products that can help minimize the appearance of the scar, as well as beneficial laser treatments.
