Having ears that are asymmetrical or stick out can be uncomfortable and cause people to feel insecure. Some individuals may feel that their ears draw too much attention, or distract from other features that they feel more confident in. Ear surgery can reposition the ears so they sit closer to the head and are less visible.
What is Ear Surgery?
Ear surgery, also known as otoplasty or ear pinning, is a surgical procedure used to correct deformities of the ear such as asymmetry and problems with protruding ears. Ear surgery typically involves the ears being pinned back so they lie closer to the head, rather than being forward-facing.
What is an Ear Surgery Procedure Like?
During the initial consultation at our practice, Dr. Sozer will examine your ears, pointing out multiple techniques that can be used during the otoplasty procedure. Your surgeon will answer any questions you may have and explain the most appropriate way to address your ear concerns.
During the procedure, an incision is made behind or inside the ears. Any technique used will leave almost no visible marks once the incisions are healed. Usually, the position of the ears is adjusted and they are pinned closer to the head. The cartilage of the ear may also be cut, folded, or shaved to create a more symmetrical and aesthetic appearance.
What is Recovery Like After Ear Surgery?
After surgery, you will need a bandage on the ears for a couple of days. After the bandage is removed, you may receive a recommendation to use a headband at night, like those used in tennis, to retain the shape of your ears until they are healed. You may experience some swelling and bruising around the ears. The bruising will disappear in one or two weeks, and the swelling will disappear completely after a couple of months.
Am I a Good Ear Surgery Candidate?
This procedure can be performed at El Paso Cosmetic Surgery if you are at least 15 years of age, with a parent or guardian present. A proper evaluation is necessary to see if surgical or non-surgical procedures are appropriate.
You may also be a good candidate if you:
- Have pronounced, protruding, asymmetrical, or deformed ears
- Are a healthy individual and do not have any medical conditions that may impair healing
- Have realistic expectations and a positive outlook
- Are a non-smoker
