What is a Rhinoplasty?

A rhinoplasty, often referred to as a “Nose Job,” is a nose reshaping surgery that is performed to give the nose a more pleasing appearance. Rhinoplasty can enhance or alter the appearance and structure of the whole face by bringing balance to the features.

What is a Rhinoplasty Procedure Like?

During your initial consultation, Dr. Sozer will evaluate you and perform a 3D Vectra simulation to help visualize and explore possible rhinoplasty outcomes. The 3D simulation allows us to help you envision your outcomes side by side, explain and set limitations, as well as decide on the best possible treatment plan for you.

Rhinoplasty procedures vary depending on each individual’s nose and their surgery goals. During a rhinoplasty, incisions are made inside the nose, and sometimes in the columella, the narrow strip of tissue between the nostrils. Through the incisions, the nose structure is reshaped to be more flattering on the face. If the nose is too large for the face, bone or cartilage can be removed during the reshaping. If the nose needs structure added to it, cartilage grafts may be used.

Nose-related medical issues can also be addressed during a rhinoplasty procedure. The most common nose-related medical issue is a deviated septum. A deviated septum occurs when the cartilage that separates your nostrils is out of position, causing breathing problems, nosebleeds, and even pain. A septoplasty is a surgical procedure that can be combined with a rhinoplasty to repair a deviated nasal septum.

What is Recovery Like After a Rhinoplasty?

After the procedure, a cast will be placed over the nose, which will remain for about a week. The nose is also filled with packing during the procedure, and the packing is usually removed within ten days. Patients can go home the same day as their nose surgery, but there will be noticeable swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes.

Bruising will typically disappear completely within two weeks, but swelling usually lasts longer. Most swelling resolves significantly in the first month, but some swelling may last for six months to a year. Most patients can return to work within one to two weeks of surgery. Patients can go back to physical activities one month after nose surgery, but they must avoid sports-related activities where it may be possible to experience a trauma to the nose.

Am I a Good Rhinoplasty Candidate?

At El Paso Cosmetic Surgery, we recommend that our rhinoplasty patients are at least 18 years old before undergoing nose surgery. Patients under the age of 18 will need parent or guardian consent. Good rhinoplasty candidates will be in good health and have realistic expectations of what nose surgery can achieve.

You may be a good candidate for nose surgery if your nose:

  • Looks too large for your face
  • Has a bump on the bridge when viewed from the side
  • Seems too wide when viewed from the front
  • Has a tip that is droopy or plunges, or that is thick or enlarged
  • Has excessively flared nostrils
  • Is off-center, crooked, or appears asymmetrical
