Tummy Tuck for Men
While tummy tuck procedures are often performed to combat the effects of pregnancy, they can also be extremely beneficial for men, particularly those with excess skin. Men who have undergone bariatric surgery and lost a significant amount of weight are often left with excess skin and tissue in the abdominal area. A tummy tuck can help flatten the abdominal area and improve the tone and appearance of a man’s midsection.
What is a Male Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a procedure that removes the excess skin and tissue from the abdomen and tightens the remaining skin and underlying tissues. A tummy tuck can also remove some of the excess fat that tends to accumulate around the abdominal area. The procedure creates a smoother, more contoured midsection.
What is a Male Tummy Tuck Procedure Like?
During your initial consultation with Dr. Sozer or Dr. Phillips, your surgeon will evaluate you and explain your procedural options in detail. There are several different kinds of tummy tuck procedures available to our male patients at El Paso Cosmetic Surgery:
- Mini Abdominoplasty
- Standard Abdominoplasty
- Extended Abdominoplasty
- Double Extended with Vertical Incision Abdominoplasty
- Circumferential Lift
The type of procedure that is necessary is determined by the skin’s elasticity, the amount of excess skin and tissue, and the condition of the abdominal wall. More complex procedures will require longer incisions, and therefore, longer scars. The abdominoplasty scar will be low on your abdomen, where it will be easily concealed by boxers, briefs, or swim trunks.
With time, the scar will fade. However, scar visibility can vary depending on the type of abdominoplasty performed and each individual’s natural healing process. We recommend medical-grade scar products that can help minimize the appearance of the scar, as well as beneficial laser treatments.
What is Recovery Like After a Tummy Tuck?
The amount of recovery time that is necessary after a tummy tuck surgery varies greatly among men. Depending on the extent of your abdominoplasty procedure and your individual healing process, you may be able to return to work one to three weeks after surgery. Many patients can resume their normal activities, including mild exercise, after five weeks.
A surgical compression garment will be provided for you after your tummy tuck. The garment helps to decrease swelling and encourage proper healing, and it should be worn for four weeks after the surgery.
Am I a Good Male Tummy Tuck Candidate?
Tummy tuck procedures can be extremely beneficial for men who have loose skin or protruding abdominal areas. Tummy tucks are best for men who are close to a normal weight and have more excess skin than fat. While abdominoplasty procedures can remove some abdominal fat, they are not a weight loss procedure.
You may be a good candidate for a tummy tuck if you:
- Have lost weight and now have sagging or excess abdominal skin
- Have extra fatty tissue in the abdominal area
- Have separated or weakened abdominal muscles
- Are in generally good health
- Have a positive outlook and realistic expectations of what surgery can achieve
- Are a non-smoker
