The eyebrows frame the eyes and add structure and definition to the facial features. To maintain facial symmetry, eyebrows should be as close to identical as possible. Numerous circumstances such as burns, chemotherapy, diseases, physical injury, and radiation can cause the eyebrows to become depleted or no longer existent. Those who pluck their eyebrows excessively can leave scars where hairs once grew. Others lack eyebrows for congenital reasons.
What is Eyebrow Restoration?
Eyebrow restoration is the process of transplanting hair from a donor site to the eyebrows in order to make them appear more full, shapely, or symmetrical. Eyebrow restoration can also be done to cover scars in the brows.
The best results for eyebrow restoration are obtained through follicular unit hair transplantation. Single follicles are transferred individually at the exact angles to create or restore the brows. This is a very delicate procedure with excellent results when performed by an experienced surgeon or technician.
What is an Eyebrow Restoration Procedure Like?
Our hair transplant technicians can perform eyebrow restoration procedures by taking the hair from above the ears through follicular unit extraction (FUE). This allows for small single hair grafts and no scarring at the donor site. The average number of hair follicles needed for eyebrow restoration is around 300-600.
By using the FUE technique with the NeoGraft® hair restoration device, many of the transplanted follicles will retain their hair shaft, bypassing the shedding period. The hair will begin to grow after three to four months. You will need to trim the hair regularly, as the transplanted hair will grow out like scalp hair.
Eyebrow restoration is an outpatient procedure that is performed under local anesthesia. Some patients choose to undergo other facial cosmetic procedures at the time of brow hair transplantation such as an eyelid lift, facial fat transfer, and/or a facelift.
What is Recovery Like After Eyebrow Restoration?
This minimally invasive procedure allows for quick recovery. After eyebrow restoration, patients may experience minor to mild pain and discomfort, which should dissipate a few days after the procedure. Swelling and scab formation may occur in more severe cases.
Within about six weeks of hair restoration, some of the transplanted hair may fall out, and will be replaced as the new hair grows in during the next four months. Sometimes, several transplantation sessions may be necessary to achieve the desired hair density.
Am I a Good Eyebrow Restoration Candidate?
Candidates for eyebrow restoration procedures should be in good general health and have adequate donor hair to use during transplantation. Most eyebrow restoration procedures are performed using hair from above the ears.
Eyebrow restoration candidates should also have realistic expectations about what the procedure can achieve, and should understand that multiple sessions may be required to achieve their desired results. Hair coarseness, as well as curl pattern or hair texture, can influence the density and appearance of the eyebrows after hair transplantation.
