Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is a common condition characterized by the overdevelopment of breast tissue in men or boys. Gynecomastia is caused by an imbalance in hormones and typically presents during puberty. These hormone changes can either be natural or caused by a medication or underlying medical or hormonal condition.

While gynecomastia is common and usually does not cause physical complications, it can make men or boys feel uncomfortable or self-conscious in social situations, especially when they have their shirts off. Some patients may also experience physical symptoms, such as tender, swollen, or painful breasts.

What is a Gynecomastia Correction Procedure?

Gynecomastia treatment, or breast reduction for men, corrects the enlarged breasts by removing fat and glandular tissue, and in some cases, excess skin. This procedure results in a flatter, firmer chest with a more masculine contour. Gynecomastia procedures are frequently combined with liposuction to further improve the contours of the chest, as well as other areas of the body.

What is a Gynecomastia Correction Procedure Like?

At your initial consultation, Dr. Sozer will examine your chest/breasts to decide the best approach for your surgery, as well as what procedures are necessary to produce the desired result.

During the procedure, your surgeon will make an incision on each breast in an inconspicuous area. Excess fat and glandular tissue will be removed through the incisions. Excess skin may also be removed if needed. If most of the tissue consists of fat, your doctor may use liposuction to remove the excess fat deposits.

What is Recovery Like After a Gynecomastia Procedure?

Recovery time following gynecomastia surgery varies greatly among individuals. Depending on your general physical condition and the extent of your surgery, you may be able to return to non-strenuous activities from one to three weeks after surgery. Many patients can resume their normal activities, including mild exercise, within a few weeks. It is normal to experience mild, periodic discomfort and swelling during recovery.

A surgical compression garment will be provided at our facility to help decrease swelling in the chest after gynecomastia correction surgery. It is recommended to wear the garment for the first two to three weeks after your surgery. Your surgeon will indicate when it is best to discontinue. It may be up to three to six months before you see the full results of the procedure, as swelling continues to decrease with time.

Am I a Good Gynecomastia Procedure Candidate?

If you are planning on losing weight, is recommended to lose weight prior to considering a gynecomastia procedure, as weight loss can affect the results of the procedure. Gynecomastia procedures are best for candidates who are close to their ideal weight and have deposits of fat in the breasts.

You may be a candidate for gynecomastia correction surgery if you:

  • Are a male individual who is bothered by their large breasts
  • Have excess skin or tissue in the chest area
  • Have a positive outlook and realistic expectations for improving the symptoms of gynecomastia
  • Are in generally good health and do not have any medical conditions that may impair healing
