What to Expect After a Tummy Tuck

Whether it’s caused by age, weight changes, or childbirth, many people are frustrated by loose skin and excess fat around their middle that doesn’t respond to exercise or dieting. A tummy tuck can remove this extra tissue and give you a slimmer, more defined profile.

What is a Tummy Tuck?

Commonly known as a tummy tuck, abdominoplasty is a procedure to improve the appearance of a sagging stomach. It removes excess skin and fat and tightens loose abdominal muscles.

El Paso Cosmetic Surgery offers several types of tummy tucks to meet your unique needs:

  • Mini abdominoplasty
  • Standard abdominoplasty
  • Extended abdominoplasty
  • Double extended with vertical incision abdominoplasty
  • Circumferential lift

Which procedure is best for you will depend on your goals and concerns, your skin’s elasticity, and the condition of your abdominal muscles. Your provider will also discuss whether other procedures, such as liposuction, may be more beneficial for you.

Tummy Tuck Procedure

The surgery and recovery time of a tummy tuck depends greatly on what kind of procedure you have. This will also affect where the incisions are made and how visible the scars will be. During your consultation, Dr. Sozer will discuss your goals to determine which procedure is best for you.

Tummy tucks are performed under general anesthesia at our accredited El Paso Cosmetic Surgical Center. Typically, incisions will be made under your bikini line, where they can be easily hidden by clothing. Dr. Sozer will then be able to remove and tighten the abdominal tissue.

What to Expect After a Tummy Tuck

You will be able to return home the same day with the help of a friend or family member. We will provide you with a surgical compression garment that you should wear for about four weeks after the procedure.

Swelling, bruising, and soreness are normal for a few weeks, and you may need help with routine chores or childcare for a few days. During this time, you should sleep on an incline to promote good circulation and rest as much as possible.

Most people can return to work and their regular routines within a month, but you should avoid strenuous activities for approximately six weeks.
