Abdominal Etching

A washboard stomach can be extremely difficult to achieve, as even well-conditioned abdominal muscles can be hidden by a thin layer of fat. Abdominal etching surgery is a safe way to give the abs more definition. At El Paso Cosmetic Surgery, our experienced surgeons can accentuate the existing muscles by removing targeted areas of fat, creating the highly coveted “six-pack” appearance.

What is Abdominal Etching?

Abdominal etching, also known as liposculpture, is a surgical technique that adds definition to the abdominal muscles and contours the midsection by removing targeted, unwanted fat. This procedure is a popular plastic surgery choice for men, as it can provide a natural-looking toned and masculine appearance to the abdominal area.

What is an Abdominal Etching Procedure Like?

Prior to your abdominal etching procedure, you will have a consultation with Dr. Sozer, during which you will be thoroughly examined and all of your questions will be addressed. This procedure will be performed under general anesthesia. During your consultation, you and your doctor will consider all factors and decide which option is best for you.

Prior to your procedure, your doctor will outline your abdominal muscles, and these lines will serve as a guide during the surgery. During the procedure, several small incisions are made in the naval or the natural creases of the abdomen, where they are inconspicuous once healed. A typical abdominal etching procedure requires four or five incisions, each only about an eighth to a quarter of an inch in length.

A cannula, or a flexible tube, is then inserted through the incisions and used to sculpt the abs. The cannula has a gentle suction that is used to remove excess fat. Your surgeon will expertly manipulate the cannula along the lines of your abdominal muscles, sculpting the midsection.

What is Recovery Like After Abdominal Etching?

For a few weeks after abdominal etching surgery, you will need to wear a compression garment, which should only be removed when bathing. You may experience some bruising, swelling, and pain after the procedure, which will be managed with proper care and medication. It is important that you limit exercise and avoid lifting any objects over ten pounds or putting any pressure on the abdominal area.

As the bruising and swelling resolve over the first several weeks, you will begin to see your results and notice increased abdominal contours. Swelling will continue to subside with time. The full results of the procedure typically become visible within six months, after the body has had ample time to heal.

Am I a Good Abdominal Etching Candidate?

If you have a thin layer of fat covering your abdominal muscles and have not been able to achieve a six-pack through diet and exercise alone, you may be an excellent candidate for abdominal etching.

You may also be a good candidate for abdominal etching if you:

  • Have well-toned underlying abdominal muscles that can be emphasized by etching
  • Are close to your ideal body weight and have good skin elasticity
  • Have undergone previous tummy tuck surgery or liposuction and want a fitter, more chiseled appearance
  • Are committed to maintaining a proper diet and healthy amounts of exercise to ensure the longevity of your surgical results
  • Are a healthy individual without any medical conditions that can impair healing
  • Are a non-smoker
