Due to weight loss or aging, the skin and tissue of the thighs can lose their elasticity over time, and the thighs can begin to sag. Excess skin between the thighs can be both a cosmetic and comfort concern. It can cause men and women to feel uncomfortable with the appearance of their thighs, especially when wearing shorts or a swimsuit. It can also cause chafing and discomfort while walking and during exercise.
What is a Thigh Lift?
A thigh lift removes excess skin and tightens the tissue of the thighs so they do not rub together, making movement more comfortable and creating a more aesthetically contoured leg. There are multiple different types of thigh lift procedures and techniques that can be utilized. During your initial consultation with Dr. Sozer or Dr. Phillips, your surgeon will recommend the procedure most suited for your needs.
What is a Thigh Lift Procedure Like?
There are several approaches to thigh lift surgery, and we will tailor your procedure to your individual needs. There are three kinds of thigh lift procedures performed at El Paso Cosmetic Surgery.
Spiral Thigh Lift
Some patients who have lost an extreme amount of weight may benefit from a spiral thigh lift, a procedure that results in a circumferential lift of the thighs. During a spiral thigh lift, your surgeon will make an incision within the crease of the groin, extending under the crease of the buttocks. This procedure improves the appearance of the inside and outside of the leg, creating an overall smoother contour.
Medial Thigh Lift
Patients who have lost weight often experience problems with excess skin on the insides of their thighs. The appearance of the inner thighs can be dramatically improved with medial thigh lift surgery. During a medial thigh lift procedure, incisions are made along the groin and upper inner thighs. Through these incisions, excess skin and tissue are removed, and the skin is drawn together for a slimmer, tighter appearance.
What is Recovery Like After a Thigh Lift?
Thigh lift recovery times can range depending on the individual patient. The estimated recovery time is two to three weeks. The first two weeks are critical after thigh surgery. During this time, patients may have restrictions on the range of motion, because movements that stress the incisions can risk the opening of the suture line. Open wounds in the thigh area are difficult to heal because of the tension of gravity pulling down on the full weight of the legs. The incisions are also stressed during movement when walking, sitting, bending, and even just getting in and out of bed.
It is important that swelling be kept to a minimum and incisions are allowed to fully heal. A surgical garment will be worn for three to six weeks to help reduce swelling and aid healing. Depending on their employment, most patients may be able to return to work within 10 days, with limitations.
Full results should be seen within three to six months after surgery as swelling dissipates completely. Depending on the type of thigh lift performed, the scar length can vary. With time, the scar will fade. However, scar visibility can vary. We recommend medical-grade scar products that can help minimize the appearance of the scar, as well as beneficial laser treatments.
