A mommy makeover, also known as post-pregnancy surgery, is a combination of cosmetic procedures that restore your pre-pregnancy appearance. Mommy Makeover procedures address issues caused by hormonal fluctuations, weight gain, and weight loss caused by pregnancy and delivery. Additionally, the Mommy Makeover helps correct lost volume and shape as a result of pregnancy and breastfeeding. A mommy makeover may include a combination of procedures such as a tummy tuck, breast surgery (breast augmentation, breast lift, a breast lift with augmentation, or breast reduction) and liposuction.
Find yourself missing how you used to look before the baby? You are not alone. According to The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 62% of mothers seek plastic surgery to get their figures back. Be the best version of you and have the best of both worlds.
Candidates for a Mommy Makeover
We recommend that all women considering a Mommy Makeover wait 6 months after pregnancy to have a Mommy Makeover procedure. Women should stop breastfeeding at least for 6 months prior to surgery. We do not recommend having a Mommy Makeover procedure if you are considering have more children.
The best candidate for the Mommy Makeover is if:
- You have sagging breasts, uneven breasts, decreased breast volume, drooping nipples and/or stretched areolas as a result of pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Your breasts have become so much larger after childbirth that they are out of proportion with the rest of your body and they cause back pain
- Your tummy has loose skin and stretch marks and your waistline has become thick and undefined
- You had a C-section and now you have areas of fat hanging over your surgical scar
- Suffer from pockets of fat that won’t respond to healthy diet and exercise
- Individuals with a positive outlook and realistic goals for what surgery can accomplish
- Individuals committed to leading a healthy lifestyle, including proper nutrition and fitness
Mommy Makeover Procedure Options
The Mommy Makeover can be customized based on your specific cosmetic issues and you only need to undergo the procedures that will help achieve your desired results. Most Mommy Makeover procedures involve breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reductions, liposuction, and/or tummy tuck (abdominoplasty). Each procedure is designed to help address the above cosmetic issues, resulting in youthful-looking breasts and a slimmer, more contoured stomach.
Procedures may include:
Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
Due to pregnancy, many women tend to have more issues relating to the abdominal area, such as stretch marks, laxity of the abdominal wall, and loosening of the skin. A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), removes the excess loose skin and fat that tends to accumulate around the abdomen and tightens and firms the entire area that can be resistant to diet and exercise for women.
Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
Gravity, loss of skin elasticity from weight gain and loss, pregnancy, and breastfeeding can all negatively affect breast shape and firmness. A breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, will lift and tighten sagging or deflated breasts. Many times, a breast implant (augmentation) may be recommended when a lift will not provide sufficient volume to the breast.
Many times, during pregnancy, breasts can swell to a fuller size and shape. In some women, the breasts remain larger. Women with excessively large breasts that are too large in proportion to their body frame can greatly benefit from breast reduction. A breast reduction is a procedure that removes excess breast fat, tissue, and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion with your body and to alleviate the discomfort associated with overly large breasts.
Many times, after pregnancy, breasts tend to become smaller and/or have lost their firmness or shape after weight loss or giving birth. Patients who do not experience sagging or drooping of breasts may be recommended a breast augmentation. Breast augmentation increases or restores breast size using implants such as saline implants, silicone gel implants, or cohesive gel implants. Using fat transfer is another option aside from implants.
Liposuction is a procedure that removes unwanted deposits of fat and can help improve the contour of the stomach, hips, thighs, arms, and many other areas of the body with the goal of producing a more proportionate body contour after childbearing.
Mommy Makeover Recovery and Results
Recovery time following a Mommy Makeover surgery varies greatly among individuals. Depending on your general physical condition and the extent of your surgery, you may be able to return to non-strenuous activities from one to three weeks after surgery. Many patients can resume their normal activities, including mild exercise, within a few weeks. It is normal to experience mild, periodic discomfort and swelling during recovery. Full results should be seen within 3-6 months post-surgery.
