Liposuction is a popular procedure at El Paso Cosmetic Surgery that removes unwanted fat deposits from the stomach, hips, thighs, arms, neck, and many other areas of the body to produce a more proportionate body contour. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, in 2019 over 265,000 liposuction procedures were performed in the United States.
What is Liposuction?
A liposuction procedure involves removing accumulated excess fat from specific body areas, resulting in a more sculpted look. Depending on the site and the amount of fat that needs to be reduced, our state-of-the-art clinic offers various types of minimally invasive and surgical options as outpatient procedures.
What is a Liposuction Procedure Like?
We offer several liposuction techniques at our practice, including conventional, ultrasound-assisted, and laser-assisted methods. At El Paso Cosmetic Surgery, we can tailor your liposuction procedure to your unique body type, individual needs, and procedure goals.
During a standard liposuction procedure, general anesthesia is used and small incisions are made near the treatment area(s). A small hollow tube called a cannula is inserted into the incisions and is used to remove fat from under the skin. Standard liposuction has immediate, impactful results, but also requires a more significant post-recovery time.
Depending on the area and extent of fat removal, we have several advanced options to traditional liposuction at El Paso Cosmetic Surgery:
At El Paso Cosmetic Surgery, we specialize in tumescent liposuction, a more effective procedure that is safer, less painful, and has a quicker recovery time than traditional liposuction.
During this liposuction procedure, the area to be treated is instilled with a ‘tumescent solution’ containing a local anesthetic, a vasoconstrictor, and saline that causes the area to swell. This method significantly reduces bleeding during the procedure, as well as pain, bruising, and swelling after the procedure. After injecting this fluid into the target area, a microcannula is inserted, and the fat removed. These smaller cannulas are more gentle and accurate. The incisions are made in natural skin folds, making post-operative scars less visible.
VASER Lipo uses state-of-the-art ultrasound technology designed to gently reshape your body. The initial phase of VASER Lipo resembles that of tumescent liposuction, where the patient is administered the tumescent solution. Instead of using a cannula to remove the fat cells, a probe is then inserted through the incisions that use ultrasonic energy to break down and emulsify the fat. This lessens the trauma to the body and helps with faster recovery. The fat is then aspirated out of the body.
Specific pockets of fat that may also be tougher or more fibrous, like in gynecomastia, are effectively removed with this technique.
What is Recovery Like After Liposuction?
Due to swelling and bruising after the surgery, you may not fit into the clothes that you would normally wear. To promote proper healing, you will need to wear a special garment over the treated areas for four to six weeks. Swelling and bruising will usually subside in a few weeks, at which point you will be able to wear your regular clothes again. Most patients can go back to work within three to five days.
Am I a Good Liposuction Candidate?
Women and men who are close to their ideal weight but who have isolated fat deposits in certain areas of the body are generally good candidates for liposuction. Optimal results are achieved when the skin has good elasticity. When the skin lacks elasticity, an additional skin-tightening procedure may be necessary to produce the desired result.
Liposuction is also best for candidates who:
- Have a positive outlook and realistic goals for what surgery can accomplish
- Are committed to leading a healthy lifestyle, including proper nutrition and fitness
- Are non-smokers
Patients continuously gaining and losing weight are not good candidates for liposuction. If lifestyle changes to stabilize weight are not effectively implemented, the results from liposuction will degrade with time. Patients who have loose or sagging skin or poor skin elasticity may not be a candidate for liposuction.
