Candidates for a Facelift

There are no age limitations for undergoing a facelift procedure. Although most patients are between 40 and 70 years old, any patient with good overall health may undergo the facelift procedure.  You may also be a good candidate if:

  • You are healthy individual and do not have any medical conditionals that may impair healing
  • Have realistic expectations and positive outlook
  • A non-smoker. Patients are asked to stop smoking approximately 2-3 weeks prior and after surgery.

Procedure Right for Me

During the initial consultation at our practice, Dr. Sozer will examine your face and neck, pointing out multiple techniques that can be used during the facelift. The public is often confused by the multiple names a facelift procedure can be given. Mini facelift, lower facelift, and mid-facelift, are some of the terms to name a few. Facelift procedures can be categorized according to the extent of surgery and location of facial corrections. Therefore, it’s important to consider the specific areas they want to target for improvement, desired length of recovery, and your post-surgical expectations.

Full Facelift vs Mini Facelift

A full facelift consists of all three procedures: Mid-Facelift, Neck Lift, and Brow/Forehead Lift. It involves not only tightening of the skin, but also underlying fat and muscle.

Mini facelift is perfect for individuals with early aging and usually target mid or lower portion of the face.  Usually, incisions are shorter and have shorter recovery time. Most candidates range between the ages of 30-40s or are patients who have had a previous facelift and need a touchup.

Mid-Facelift:

The mid-facelift, or cheek lift, procedure can lift sagging cheeks, smooth nasal folds, and pull up the corners of the lips. This procedure can be performed alone or in combination with other facial surgeries. A mid-facelift is performed through tiny incisions placed within the hairline at the temple and on the inside of the mouth. During the procedure, fat pads in the cheeks will be repositioned up and over the cheekbones. This procedure is best complimented with a neck lift (if applicable).

Neck Lift:

The procedure is sometimes called a cervicoplasty or neck lift platysmaplasty. Patients with excess fat of the neck, loose neck skin, and/or loose neck muscles are excellent candidates for a neck lift. The procedure is also indicated in patients that wish to have a more defined neck angle. When performing a neck lift procedure, the neck muscles are tightened either through the chin incision and/or the decision behind the ears.

Not all patients are candidates for a neck lift.  Alternative procedures may include liposuction to neck, Kybella (injectable) and/or Coolsculpting to neck.

Forehead Lift or Brow Lift:

The forehead is the part of the face that ages the earliest. Even at young ages, some people start to develop frown lines and horizontal forehead wrinkles. For many, the brows start to drop early in life. A brow lift, also called a forehead lift, can reverse these signs of aging on the forehead and restore the brows to a more desirable level. We offer several methods of forehead/brow rejuvenation at El Paso Cosmetic Surgery, and the Endoscopic Brow Lift is one of our techniques. An endoscope is a fiber-optic camera that allows us to elevate the brow and rejuvenate the forehead with minimal incisions. This camera is introduced under the skin and subcutaneous tissues through a tiny incision made behind the hairline. This procedure is best complimented with an eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty).

Facelift Recovery

Recovery time following a facelift surgery varies greatly among individuals. Depending on your general physical condition and the extent of your surgery, you may be able to return to non-strenuous activities from one to three weeks after surgery. Bruising from a facelift typically disappears in one to two weeks, but swelling may last longer. A significant portion of the swelling will subside in the first month, but complete resolution requires six months or longer. After a facelift, patients may experience some change in the sensation in the skin or in the face, which can last for up to a year.

Risks and Complications

All surgery has risks and potential complications. Although the risks are not common, it is important that you understand the potential complications and know that no surgeon can offer risk-free surgery or guarantee of perfect result. Dr. Sozer will discuss any possible risks in detail during your consultation and will be sure to answer any questions or concerns that may arise.
