FUE Hair Transplant

Follicular-Unit Extraction (FUE) allows the extraction and harvesting of individual follicles from donor area without incisions or linear scar.

Causes of Hair Loss in Men

Baldness in men occurs when the follicle shrinks over time, resulting in shorter and finer hair. This results in a very small follicle with no hair inside. Ordinarily, hair should grow back. However, in men who are balding, the follicle fails to grow a new hair. Why this occurs is not well understood, but it is related to your genes and male sex hormones. Even though the follicles are small, they remain alive, suggesting the possibility of new growth.

Male pattern baldness does not indicate a medical disorder, but it may affect self-esteem or cause anxiety. The hair loss is usually permanent. Hair loss affects every aspect of their life. It affects interpersonal relationships as well as their professional life. It is not uncommon for men to change their career paths because of hair loss.

Causes of Hair Loss in Women

It seems incredible to most people that a woman might lose her hair.  After all – isn’t that something that only happens to men?  The truth is that many women suffer from hair loss and that Female Pattern Hair Loss (or FPHL for short) can be emotionally devastating. According to the American Association of Dermatologist, hair loss among women is common and approximately 30 million American women suffer from hereditary hair loss.

Androgenetic alopecia in a woman (sometimes termed androgenic alopecia) is the diagnosis of Female Pattern Hair loss.  Most women associate this hair loss with post-menopausal changes, but it can happen at any time, even starting as early as a woman’s late teens and twenties.  It typically takes the form of decreased hair mass on the top of the head but sparing the frontal hairline.

Hair loss can occur in women for reasons other than female pattern baldness, including the following:

  • Temporary shedding of hair
  • Breaking of hair (from such things as styling treatments and twisting or pulling of hair)
  • Patchy areas of total hair loss
  • Medications
  • Certain skin diseases
  • Hormonal abnormalities
  • Iron deficiency
  • Under-active thyroid
  • Vitamin deficiency

Candidates for Hair Transplants

Candidates for hair restoration surgery are those individuals in good health with moderate hair loss and sufficient donor hair on the back of the scalp to transplant into the balding areas. Those with more donor hair, greater hair density and fullness can typically expect fuller results. It is also important that you have reasonable cosmetic goals. Hair transplantation can achieve very good, natural results but cannot restore your hair to the density you had as a teenager. Your doctor will assess the amount of coverage needed to give you the appearance you desire.

NeoGraft Hair Transplant Process

Hair transplantation is a process in which hair is taken from the back of the head or donor area and replaced in areas where hair loss has occurred. The NeoGraft system uses a special technology that can quickly remove the hair follicles from the donor area and implant them to balding areas. NeoGraft uses a controlled pneumatic pressure to slide out the graft smoothly, so there is no pulling or twisting which can risk damaging the graft. NeoGraft transplant is faster and the grafts can be re-implanted sooner which keeps them more robust, increasing the success of the grafting process.

Hair Restoration Treatment areas

Hair transplantation can be done on the scalp. Hair can also be transplanted to get fuller facial hair and even fuller eyebrows.  A proper evaluation will be needed to determine how many hair follicles are needed.

  • The average hair follicles needed on a scalp is 1000-3500. Patient’s may require additional session(s) depending on the baldness and desired fullness.
  • The average hair follicles needed on eyebrows is around 300-600.
  • The average hair follicles needed for facial hair starts around 500 and up.

Treatment Recovery and Results

The recovery varies from person to person; however, most patients can go back to work the next day. Minor swelling and bruising may occur.  Dr. Sozer will go over your restrictions at the time of your consultation.

Hair follicles are taken from the hair at the back or side of the head that is genetically programmed to continue to grow. The follicles that hold your transplanted hair are living tissues that grow cyclically. Like normal hair growth, transplantation is an ongoing process that requires a commitment of time.

Once the hair follicle has been implanted into the balding area, the grafted hair will stay in place for about two to three weeks before shedding. After shedding, the new growth will begin in 3-4 months; this is normal and an important part of the new hair growth process. Some hair can grow between 3 to 4 months but 75% of the patients have almost nothing then. Most hair starts to grow at 6 months with ongoing improvement between 6 to 12 months.  Patients do not see appreciable growth until 9 months.

Risks and Complications

Side effects are minimal; most clients can expect some minor bruising, redness, and swelling at the treatment site. Dr. Sozer will discuss any possible risks in detail during your consultation and will be sure to answer any questions or concerns that may arise.
