How Do PRP Injections Work for Hair Loss?

Hair loss can cause men and women to feel self-conscious. Seeing your youthful hair starting to thin can be frustrating. Fortunately, PRP injections can restore hair growth without surgery or drugs. This treatment uses a sample of your own blood to harness your body’s healing and growth factors.

What is PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)?

PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is an injectable treatment extracted from your own blood. It contains your platelets, products of your immune system that respond to injury with powerful growth and healing signals. When injected into the scalp, PRP acts on the tissues and hair follicles to improve growth and hair health.

How Do PRP Injections Work for Hair Loss?

Your PRP treatment begins with a blood sample. Spinning this sample in a centrifuge separates a clear layer called plasma that contains your platelets. Your expert injector will inject PRP into the thinning areas of your scalp. The healing and growth factors in the PRP have several effects:

  • Stimulate blood vessel growth to nourish and oxygenate the scalp and hair follicles
  • Signal dormant hair follicles to return to an active state
  • Help follicles produce thicker, healthier hair

PRP reverses many of the effects that cause hair loss. While it works well alone, PRP is safe to use with other hair loss treatments such as medications, supplements, and even surgery. Using your own platelets makes PRP an extremely low-risk treatment option that is unlikely to cause side effects or react with other treatments.

How Many PRP Treatments Will I Need?

Most people need a series of PRP treatments to trigger hair rejuvenation, followed by occasional maintenance sessions to keep their hair growing full and healthy. You can expect a series of treatments spaced a few weeks apart, followed by maintenance treatments every six months. Each person’s treatment plan will differ depending on their needs. The initial treatment series often includes four to six sessions, and most people will need follow-up treatments if they want their results to last.

Is There Any Downtime With PRP for Hair Loss?

You should not expect any downtime after PRP injections. Avoid hot showers, scrubbing, and harsh cleansing products for 24 to 48 hours after treatment. You may experience minor bruising or swelling that lasts a few days. Reactions to PRP are almost nonexistent, and you can return to your usual activities immediately.

Am I a Good Candidate for PRP Injections for Hair Loss?

Most healthy adults can benefit from PRP injections. Men and women can receive treatment. PRP is most successful against androgenic alopecia, the most common type of hair loss, and may not work for some other causes. You may not be a good candidate if you have certain bleeding or clotting conditions that affect your platelets.
