How Does Rhinoplasty Work?

When the central feature of your face makes you uncomfortable, it can affect your confidence and hold you back from enjoying life to the fullest. Your nose draws attention immediately when you meet people, and rhinoplasty can correct the aspects that bother you and sculpt a nose you feel proud of.

What is Rhinoplasty?

The nose is an area many people focus on, so rhinoplasty or a “nose job” is a popular way to correct concerns such as crookedness, a wide bridge, tip shape, and many other issues. This procedure can also restore the shape of your nose after an injury or improve your breathing. Your El Paso Cosmetic Surgery team specializes in refined, natural-looking rhinoplasty results that balance your features and bring harmony to your face.

How Does Rhinoplasty Work?

Your rhinoplasty procedure will vary depending on your concerns and your surgeon’s strategy. During the procedure, your surgeon will reshape and reposition tissue, cartilage, and nasal bones to create the desired shape.

Closed Rhinoplasty

Some concerns can be addressed with closed rhinoplasty. This technique uses incisions inside the nose. While there are no external incisions, your surgeon may not be able to use this method if you need more significant reshaping.

Open Rhinoplasty

This type of rhinoplasty uses a small incision made between the nostrils. This incision allows your surgeon to lift the skin and access more structures. The tiny incision will heal to a nearly invisible scar. Only a consultation can determine which method will work best for you.

Rhinoplasty can be performed alone or in combination with other procedures to create a more comprehensive facial harmony. Chin augmentation is a popular option to balance your nose and define your profile.

What is Recovery Like After Rhinoplasty?

Your surgeon will place a cast on your nose after rhinoplasty and remove it during a follow-up about a week later. You will experience bruising and swelling around the eyes and nose, with the bruising resolving after about two weeks. Most people can return to work in one to two weeks and physical activity after about a month but should avoid activities where they could injure their nose for several months.

How Long Does It Take to See Rhinoplasty Results?

You may notice a difference as soon as your surgeon removes the cast after a week. However, you will still be swollen, so your nose will look different than your final results. Swelling improves greatly after the first few weeks but can take six months or more to resolve completely.

Am I a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Most healthy adults can have rhinoplasty if they have concerns about the appearance or function of their nose. Good candidates have reasonable expectations and are prepared to take the appropriate recovery time. People with certain medical conditions or who are pregnant should not have rhinoplasty.
