What Not to Do After Liposuction

Stubborn body fat can accumulate in typical areas such as around the thighs and abdomen, but you may also store fat under your chin, arms, or other places. Liposuction can remove unwanted fat from your most challenging areas. This effective treatment helps you achieve a slimmer, more sculpted figure.

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a fat removal and body sculpting procedure. It targets fat in problem areas such as the abdomen, love handles, under the chin, and other places where difficult fat accumulates. Many people find that this fat refuses to budge despite a healthy lifestyle and weight. Liposuction removes this fat using a few small incisions.

How Does Liposuction Work?

At El Paso Cosmetic Surgery, we offer several forms of liposuction to help you achieve your goals. During liposuction, a thin device called a cannula is inserted through small incisions. It is moved around to break up and suction out fat.

We specialize in tumescent liposuction, which uses a tumescent fluid containing saline, lidocaine, and blood vessel contrictors. This fluid numbs the area during and after treatment, limits swelling and bleeding, and lifts the area to protect your tissues while fat is removed. We also offer several forms of laser-assisted liposuction.

What Not to Do After Liposuction

Taking the time to recover after liposuction helps you heal and see your best results. Here are a few things you should not do after liposuction:

  • Do not worry if your usual clothes feel too tight. You may need to wear loose, comfortable clothes depending on where you had liposuction.
  • Do not avoid eating. Your body needs hydration and nutrition to heal. You may want to prepare meals for the first few days ahead of time so you do not have to cook.
  • Do not push your body too hard. Strenuous exercise should wait until your surgeon gives their approval. This timeline can vary depending on the location of your liposuction.
  • Do not rush to get back to work. Most people can return to work three to five days after liposuction. Some people may not feel up to it for a few more days. Listen to your body.
  • Do not ignore your compression garment. Wearing this garment for four to six weeks limits swelling and helps you see better results.

How Long Do Liposuction Results Last?

Your body stops growing new fat cells very early, and the fat cells removed with liposuction will not grow back. However, fat cells still in the area can store more fat if your weight changes. Liposuction results can last a lifetime when combined with a healthy lifestyle.
