Breast Implants 101

You may have a lot of questions about breast implants. The most common questions include:

  • What kind of implants should I get?
  • What will my results look like?
  • How much time will I need for recovery?
  • Are breast implants safe?

Types of Implants

Whether you choose a silicone or saline implant, it will have an external shell made of silicone. The shell can contain saline (salt water) or a silicone gel. The FDA has approved all implants currently in use.

Saline

Your surgeon will expand these implants with saline after placing them. This allows the use of a smaller incision. Saline implants have noticeable firmness. If a saline implant ruptures, the body removes the saline, and you will notice immediately.

Silicone

These implants come in a variety of silicone gel formulas. Each has a different cohesivity, so you can choose the final results you want. A ruptured silicone implant will not deflate. The silicone gel stays in place, making a rupture hard to detect.

Breast Implant Results

Breast implants do more than just enlarge the breasts. They can also enhance breast shape. Silicone implants have enough firmness to add volume to the upper part of the breast, where you probably want to see the most improvement.

Breast Implant Recovery

You will experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort for the first few days after the procedure. Most people can go back to their usual routine after a week to ten days. Your surgeon will recommend waiting three to four weeks before any strenuous activities.

Breast Implant Recalls

All surgical procedures involve some risk. Breast implants can develop an infection or other problems. Most breast implant procedures go well and give people good results. Unsafe implants have been discovered and recalled. The FDA issued a voluntary recall on a brand of textured breast implants that became associated with a very low probability of illness. The manufacturer is willingly withdrawing them from the market.

Are Breast Implants Right For Me?

Breast implants currently available have been thoroughly tested and used successfully in many procedures each year. While breast implant surgery does require some healing time, you can expect to enjoy your new implants for ten years or more. If you have reasonable expectations about what breast implants can do for you, you may make a good candidate.
