Is Breast Augmentation Done Above or Below the Muscle?
Breast augmentation is a procedure in which the size of your breasts is increased. This is done by inserting implants, which can be tailored to you depending on how big of a size increase you’re looking for. There’s more than one type of breast implant, which a lot of patients aren’t aware of before they come to us. The way the implant is placed is also a highly debated topic, with many people suggesting it’s over the muscle, while others are saying it’s under. Breast Augmentation Implant Types
All breasts are different, which is why it makes sense to have a different variety of breast implants. We currently have two options, all of which are FDA-approved:
- Saline implants – these consist of a silicone shell filled with a saltwater solution. They’re inflated to your desired size and tend to provide a shorter scar. However, they don’t look as natural.
- Silicone implants – El Paso Cosmetic surgery uses the latest generation of silicone implants. These implants are filled with silicone gel, giving them a more natural appearance and feel. The age requirement for this type of implant is 22, while saline implants are approved for anyone above the age of 18.
Above or Below the Muscle? It Depends!
The placement of your breast implants largely depends on the type you have chosen.
The general consensus among plastic surgeons is that above the muscle (subglandular placement) is best for silicone implants. This is merely because they offer a more realistic and firmer feel than saline implants. Thus, saline ones tend to go under the muscle (submuscular placement), relying on muscle tissue to add some firmness to the implant.
Of course, the amount of breast tissue you already have will come into consideration as well. Again, when you have a decent amount of existing breast tissue, the above-muscle placement is preferred. Don’t worry about making this decision on your own, the optimal breast implant placement for your case will be discussed at length by Dr. Sozer during your consultation.
